What We Do

Wastewater Collection and Service Area

Wastewater is collected in systems owned, operated, and maintained by the municipalities, the town sanitary districts, and the corporate structure of the county. From these collection systems, Walworth County Metropolitan Sewerage District (WalCoMet) interceptors and lift station facilities convey the wastewater to the water reclamation plant. The plant is located at the westerly limits of the City of Delavan on STH "11".

How the System Works

When wastewater leaves a home or business through a drain, sink, or toilet, it first travels through a sewer lateral before connecting to the local municipality’s sewer pipes. Once the wastewater enters the local municipalities sewer pipe, it flows to the lift stations and into WalCoMet’s interceptor pipes. Where the terrain allows, the District uses gravity sewer lines which use the natural slope of the land to move the wastewater through the system. In areas where gravity lines cannot be used, pressurized pipes, called force mains, are used to move the wastewater to the water reclamation facility.

Your Role in the System

Only human waste, toilet paper, and water should be flushed down toilets or put down the drain in your home or business. Improper disposal of non-flushable or unflushable items, such as wipes, dental floss, diapers, and female hygiene products, or fats, oils, and grease from kitchens, can result in expensive sewer backups into your home or business. Non-flushable items can also cause problems in the collection system by blocking sewer pipes, damaging pumps, and requiring extra cleaning of the system which results in higher costs to the system users. In addition, the sewer system is not the proper place for disposal of medications or other household wastes such as unused cleaners or pesticides. Please dispose of these items properly.
