What are Biosolids?

Biosolids are the nutrient-rich organic material produced from the treatment of domestic wastewater in a water reclamation facility. The Walworth County Metropolitan Sewerage District (WalCoMet) utilizes two biological processes, aerobic nitrification, and anaerobic digestion, to break down waste matter and remove nutrients from incoming wastewater. The anaerobic process reduces pathogens and minimizes odors, forming a safe and natural product. After treatment and processing, biosolids can be recycled in three different ways: as an agricultural fertilizer, incineration, or disposal in a landfill. When used as an agricultural fertilizer, biosolids can reduce the need for application of commercial fertilizers. Biosolids also contain micronutrients that improve and maintain productive soil and stimulate plant growth. Nutrients found in biosolids, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other trace elements, are necessary for increased crop production and growth.

WalCoMet produces approximately 3 million gallons of biosolids per year. The WalCoMet Biosolids Program is committed to effectively managing 100% of the biosolids produced through beneficial use alternatives such as agricultural land application while maintaining maximum standards for human and environmental health.

The WalCoMet Biosolids Program adheres to the guidelines and regulations set forth in the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) Code of Federal Register (CFR) 40 part 503 and the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Code 204.
